HEALING

On Wednesday evening and the first Saturday of each month a group of people give their time voluntarily at the Chaplaincy Centre in the Borders General Hospital, in the pursuit of healing. They call themselves practitioners rather than healers, because they believe they merely facilitate healing by acting as channels or catalysts.

At the root of this practice is the understanding and belief that the mind, body, soul and environment are connected through energies. There is also a deep intention to bring about a positive change and realignment with the natural balance and cycle of life.

This may sound complicated and ‘airy fairy,’ but the process is very simple and often very powerful. ‘Seeing is believing’ and ‘the proof is in the pudding….’ spring to mind as ‘healing’ has to be experienced to be fully understood and appreciated.

Whatever the problem, physical or emotional or a life dilemma, healing can bring relief, if not a cure. It can also help to clear the mind so as to see the way forward.

Initially the ‘healer’, or rather the practitioner, will listen to you and offer a drink. You can tell them in detail or briefly what the problem is and how you are feeling, but it is not necessary to tell them anything….you can just ask for healing.

The healing is done sitting in a comfortable chair. The practitioner places his/her hands on or near different parts of your body and holds them there for several minutes at a time. All you have to do is sit and relax with your eyes closed, or open if you prefer.

I have experienced this sort of healing many times. I have always felt supported and listened to with compassion and wisdom. During the actual healing session I have entered an altered state of consciousness similar to that in meditation. I have gradually relaxed and felt calmer; then I have seen bright colours, usually purple. I have also had images of people celebrating, loved ones happy and embracing each other, and special places where I have felt peaceful and safe in the past.

Despite feeling upset or tense at the start of a session I have usually left with feelings of love and hope and a better acceptance of what is happening in my life. I have also experienced a reduction in physical pain and more confidence in being able to cope with it.

`I would recommend this healing to anyone struggling to cope with illness or life’s challenges. It complements orthodox medicine and is completely safe.
